National:
Beta Gamma Sigma marks its founding as a national organization with the merger of three separate honor societies at the University of California, University of Illinois and University of Wisconsin in 1913. This merger and the subsequent rapid expansion among high-quality collegiate programs in business created a national organization which quickly took the leading role in the recognition of scholarship among students of business and management. While Beta Gamma Sigma is an autonomous organization, its early linkage with the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB-International) placed Beta Gamma Sigma chapters only at those colleges and universities which had their business programs accredited by the Assembly. That link has been maintained even to this date. The existence of a Beta Gamma Sigma chapter on campus is yet another sign of the high quality of the academic programs offered in business and management. Thus, students elected to membership in Beta Gamma Sigma are being recognized with the highest national honor that a student in business or management at an AACSB accredited institution can attain.

Since 1913, Beta Gamma Sigma has been recognizing students at colleges and universities. It is only through the local chapter at a college or university that a student may become a member of Beta Gamma Sigma. For most students, this opportunity to join with the most outstanding college students in business and management comes only once in a lifetime. The chapter and its officers play a unique role in fostering a climate where students may be encouraged to accept this invitation to membership. Each student who accepts membership in Beta Gamma Sigma becomes a life member of the Society and joins over 345,000 other individuals who have earned and who have earned this honor.

Alpha of Hawaii Chapter:
The Alpha of Hawaii Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma was established in 1971, four years after the College of Business Administration (CBA) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa received its AACSB accreditation. The first group of 31 initiates included four students from CBA's MBA Program in Tachikawa, Japan. Past faculty advisors include: Dennis Coleman, Morgan Hicks, Ralph Hook, Charles Keown, Jeff Kotteman, Marvin Loper, Stephen Moscove, Aspy Palia, Ralph Sprague, Warren Wee and Jim Wills. Today, membership in the Alpha of Hawaii chapter members more than 2,000, with more than 100 initiated each year.
